Computer basically freezes on start up. I'll boot the computer, and it'll literally freeze at the Windows boot screen, where I obviously have to reboot my computer at this point.
It'll work fine afterward, it's just that particular problem is terrible annoying, not to mention I don't think it's doing any good to have to hard boot it every time it freezes on start up.

I had this problem last year, mentioned it to a tech, and told me I had to reformat. I had my doubts, since I don't think wiping my computer clean will really solve the problem, but I'm no techie so I went through with it. Clearly that wasn't the case, since my computer is doing the same thing a year later.
Any suggestions or useful info?

Open a command prompt window (start > run > type "cmd") and type "sfc /scannow" without quotes, this runs the system file checker http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/System_File_Checker. This is a general fix-all for most problems with the operating system.

I had this exact problem, I just ran a few scans and defragmented and the computer ran fine again.

Thanks, I'll give it a shot. I'll try anything before going through the process of reformatting and re-installing everything again.

Well, did as recommended... It freezes on start up still, and my games crash while playing. Not entirely sure what the problem is anymore, wondering if I just need to upgrade my computer or at least some components after the 4 years I've had it.
If that's the case, it's a bit saddening, considering I was hoping it would last me a bit longer before I'd have to dish out money on it again.

Your pc shutting down while gaming might be because of overheating. Use this to check out your temperatures: http://openhardwaremonitor.org/. It could also be the PSU who's running hot.

The strange thing is your Windows freezing when it boots. You might want to try to do a Windows repair (just pop in the CD).

Looks like this is what I'm going to have to do. Today after my computer crashed (three times), it just wouldn't turn on altogether. I'd press the power button, the fans would start going, my keyboard would light up, and then nothing.
I may just go ahead and reinstall Windows, wipe the whole thing clean. Gonna be a pain to reinstall all my games, but hey, whatever works.

This is making me think it could be your PSU. Have you checked up on how hot it runs when you're playing games, amount of dust and such?

Use a clean as a final option since it is such a pain in the ***.

I open up my computer and blow the dust out using a can of compressed air ever once in a while, so dust probably isn't that big an issue.
I tried out the program you linked to check my temperatures and this is what came up:

No games running-

From what I've understood, what I have as temperatures aren't the best, but it could be worse.

A C2D at 55°C is fine, but that 8800 hitting almost 90°C with the fan at 100% seems like it is the problem. I know you said you clean it often enough, but I'd remove that graphics card and try to get rid of most of the dust.

Graphics cards can take a bit of heat, not 80+ when gaming.

Alright, I'll give it a shot, thanks!
If anything goes wrong I'll update the thread.
